Our twelfth Thistle Pin sees us return to the League Cup winning team. Bobby Lawrie, the Jags’ outside left, wearing number 11, scored the second Thistle goal of four on that famous day in October 1971.

Bobby's time at Thistle

Bobby was signed by Thistle in 1969 under Scott Symon, after a spell playing for Irvine Meadow XI. He had made a successful appearance as a trialist and went on to spend six seasons with Jags.

Renowned for being a true team player, Bobby was always looking for a pass to a fellow teammate, following on from one of his typical blistering runs that would leave opponents hopelessly in his wake. Although he was an unselfish player by nature, Bobby would still bag a goal or two for the Jags in his own right when the opportunity presented itself.

Lawrie wasn’t just a League Cup winner in 1971. He also helped the Jags to the old Second Division title in 1970. He played an impressive 227 times for Thistle and netted 24 goals (19 competitive) in his time at Firhill.

After Firhill

Bobby wound down his playing career firstly at Stranraer and then at various Ayrshire teams in the Scottish junior leagues, playing well into his 40s. He transitioned into management at Troon and Whitletts Victoria.

Bobby Lawrie was inducted into the Partick Thistle Hall of Fame alongside his contemporaries in the 1971 squad in 2009. We are delighted to mark his achievements in our own way.
