From Sweden to Scotland
Peter’s footballing career began in his native Sweden, with Halmstad, Lund then Halmia. He was first tempted into the Scottish game not by Thistle but by Ayr United in 1999. He never scored for the Ayrshire side, but caught the attention of the Thistle gaffer.
John Lambie had set about rebuilding the Thistle squad, after it had avoided relegation in the 1998-99 season by just a point. In December, he signed Lindau temporarily for the remainder of the 1999-2000 campaign.
Peter made an immediate impact, scoring on debut against Stenhousemuir (in a match that would also see a debut for Scott McLean). That goal would be Thistle’s last of the 1990s.
Lindau was denied Thistle’s first goal of the new millennium by the post against Hamilton, but he and Quinton Jacobs inspired Thistle back to a 2-2 draw from 2-0 down.
He would go on to play 9 games that season, scoring 4 goals (including a brace against Ross County).
The Title Team
Impressed by Lindau’s efforts in the 1999-2000 season, Lambie put him on his priority list and secured a permanent transfer to the Jags. Peter would become an indispensable part of the side that pushed for the old SFL Second Division title.
He played 35 games in a season that saw Thistle go undefeated in the league at home until April. Lindau found the net ten times, proving a thorn in the side of Clydebank on three occasions.
Lindau Day
One day sticks out as the pinnacle of the Swede’s association with the Jags.
On the 31st March 2001, the Thistle fans cascaded into Forthbank Stadium, delaying kick-off. A win would secure promotion back to the First Division, against a struggling Stirling Albion.
Thistle took the lead early when Peter struck from close in from a corner, putting the Jags 1-0 up. Touching distance of promotion. But more was to come.
The second half saw Lindau go past 2 players before rifling in from the edge of the box. But he still wasn’t finished.
A famous third was to follow, as he controlled and turned in the box to complete his hat-trick. The Jags fans went wild.
Promotion was secured, and 31st March will forever be known as “Lindau Day”.
Return to Scandinavia
Lambie offered Lindau a contract extension after the title-winning exploits. But, alas, Peter decided to move back to Scandinavia. He would play out the rest of his career with Strømsgodset and Kongsvinger in Norway.
Though only at Firhill for 18 months, Peter Lindau was a fans favourite, playing 44 times and netting on 14 occasions for the Club.
There was another high profile Swedish player plying his trade in the west of Scotland at that time, but for Jags fans, there truly was only “One Swede in Glasgow”.
